Double Strokes

Side view of drummer drumming

Drummers double strokes are used to double our speed while staying relaxed by combining wrist and finger strokes.  Finger strokes require a lot less energy and motion than wrist strokes.  For this reason finger strokes allow for greatly increased speed without having to work very hard.

Combinations of double strokes and single strokes are the foundation of drumming.  Adding dynamics to this approach takes it to the next level.  Incredible speed with pops of punctuation are available when doubles and singles are combined in this way.

In this video lesson I demonstrate an exercise for developing the finger sensitivity and strength necessary for playing smooth double strokes on the drums. Double strokes are made possible by efficient movement and using the natural rebound of the drums.

There are multiple aspects to be considered when working on drummers double strokes.   Staying relaxed and aware of how the stick wants to move is the most important.  Playing double strokes is very similar to how a jockey rides a racing horse.  We let the stick do what it wants to do by staying relaxed and following the stick.

Likewise, watch out for common problems which are also detailed in this video.  Tension in the hands is the most common problem.  Not staying sensitive to the stick is another.  Learning the correct motion from the beginning will help you to avoid bad habits which take even more effort to fix later.

Double strokes are an extremely effective technique and they are very much worth the effort.  This exercise should practiced daily for as long a duration as you can.  Take your time with this advanced concept and practice it carefully so that you will have nice smooth doubles.  Let’s get started on your drumming journey.
