Double Strokes.

Drummers double strokes are used to double our speed while staying relaxed by combining wrist and finger strokes.

The Shuffle.

The Shuffle is a really fun and challenging beat to work on.  Are you up for it?

The Herta.

This powerful drum fill is a three beat idea that you can hear many drummers using on a regular basis.  It’s a super fun and flashy fill that will definitely impress your friends and relatives!

The Moeller Technique.

Dynamic drumming uses up and down strokes (the Moeller Technique) which allow drummers to combine soft and loud notes in any sequence.  By doing this drummers can avoid having a flat or monotone sound.  Dynamic drumming creates a more varied and interesting musical landscape.

Drumset Ostinatos.

Drumset ostinatos are a short rhythmic pattern, or phrase, which repeats itself throughout a song or section of a song.

Buzz Roll/Drum Roll.

“Drum Roll Please!”  That famous line is spoken just before the high dive act or any other feat of daring.

16th Note Hi-Hat.

Drummers often utilize different cymbal treatments over any given snare and bass drum pattern.  This approach allows us to create different cymbal textures while maintaining the underlying rhythmic pulse.

Bounce Strokes.

Bounce strokes are an essential  technique that every drummer utilizes.  Drummers use their fingers, wrists and arms when playing. In this video I outline strokes which use fingers exclusively.

Afro-Cuban 6/8.

the Afro-Cuban 6/8 is unlike many drum beats in that it implies a polyrhythmic feel. A polyrhythm has two or more contrasting rhythms in a musical setting.  In this case the feet will be playing in groups 2 while the hands will be implying groups of 3.

Flams.

Flams give drummers the means to thicken up the sound of any given note by adding a grace note alongside the main note.

Snare Placement.

In this video lesson I demonstrate how snare placement in a Rock beat can dramatically alter the feel of the beat.

Wrist and Finger Strokes Combined.

Drummer’s take different approaches to the drums depending on the responsiveness (rebound) of the individual drum.

Matched Grip For Drums.

Here I describe in detail the matched grip for drums, the most popular stick grip used by the vast majority of drummers.
